Legend has it that during the procession to transport the Sri Maha Bodhi (the tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment) from India to Sri Lanka, a branch of the holy tree grew out of the pot while the procession halted for the night. To commemorate this event, a sapling was planted in Thanthirimale, considered by some as the first Sri Maha Bodhi sapling in Sri Lanka. The tree was planted on a protective layer of large stones that has kept it safe until today.
Wilpattu National Park, also known as the “Land of Lakes”, is a park located around the Northwest coast of Sri Lanka approximately 180 km north of Colombo.
The unique feature of this park is the existence of natural lakes. The park is 131, 693 hectares with around sixty lakes and tanks Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest and one of its oldest National Parks. At the park one can spot Elephants, Sloth Bears, abundant Birdlife and Leopards if you are lucky!
